A logo is a single mark — the icon or wordmark that identifies your business. A full brand identity is everything built around that mark: your color palette, typography, tone of voice, and how all of it applies consistently across your website, business cards, packaging, and social media. In short, a logo is one piece of a brand identity, not the whole thing.
A lot of business owners come to us asking for "a logo" when what they actually need — to look consistent and professional everywhere their business shows up — is the full identity package. Neither is wrong to ask for; you just want to know which one you're actually getting.
What logo design includes
A standalone logo project usually delivers:
- The primary logo mark, plus simplified variations (icon-only, horizontal, stacked)
- File formats for both digital and print use
- Black-and-white and color versions
- Basic usage notes — minimum size, clear space around the mark
This is the right scope if you already have a general sense of your brand's colors and style, and just need a mark to represent it — or if budget means you need to start with the logo now and build out the rest later.
What a full brand identity includes
A brand identity project builds outward from the logo into a complete, reusable system:
- Everything in a standalone logo package
- A defined color palette (primary and secondary colors, with exact codes)
- Typography choices for headings and body text
- Brand guidelines document — how the logo, colors, and fonts should and shouldn't be used
- Application across real assets: business cards, letterhead, social media templates, and often the direction for a matching website
This is the right scope when you're launching a new business, rebranding an existing one, or you're tired of your marketing materials looking inconsistent because different people made different pieces at different times without a shared system to follow.
How to tell which one you need
| Situation | Best fit |
|---|---|
| You just need a mark for a new small project or side hustle | Logo design |
| You're launching a new business from scratch | Full brand identity |
| Your current materials (cards, posts, packaging) don't look like they belong together | Full brand identity |
| You already have a brand identity and just need a refreshed mark | Logo design |
Why this distinction actually matters
Choosing the wrong scope wastes money either way. Pay for a full identity system when a logo alone would've solved the problem, and you've overspent. Buy just a logo when what you actually needed was consistency across your whole business, and you'll likely be back within a few months paying to fix mismatched print and digital materials — the exact kind of problem we cover in our print materials guide.
If you're not sure which you need, that's a completely normal starting point — tell us what you're trying to solve and we'll recommend the right scope rather than the more expensive one. You can see examples of both approaches on our portfolio.
The short version
Get a logo when you need a mark. Get a full brand identity when you need everything around that mark to work together — because in most cases, it's the consistency, not the logo alone, that makes a business look trustworthy.
